FOUR OF SWORDS

The Four of Swords as interpreted by Kirstin Wu and Reana

The Four of Swords is a card that quite literally offers us a pause amongst the challenges of its suit. Traditionally, we see images where someone is lying still and at rest, whether literally or symbolically. When we take this in the context of the suit of Air, we can understand the Four of Swords as being about finding ways to quiet and calm the mind.

Often, this card shows up for us as a reminder to slow down and create breathing space when there’s a lot of external noise or movement in our life. For many of us, actively creating space to just be feels difficult, especially when it’s exactly what we need in our fast-moving routines. The more overwhelmed we are, the harder it feels to truly rest. The Four of Swords calls us to create or draw on habits and tools that allow us to stop, listen and disconnect from our usual thoughts. This can also mean taking a step back from social interactions, or at least making space for quiet alone time if that’s something we don’t usually prioritise.

Once that space is created, dropping beneath the turbulent current of mind chatter will look different for different people, but the common thread that runs through Four of Swords practices or moments is being able to step into a more gently aware, open and meditative state of mind. This can be through a literal meditation practice, movement, journaling, therapy, a creative practice, gardening…Any kind of activity (including sleeping) that allows the brain to switch away from day-to-day worries and patterns is good to cultivate as part of a mental health toolbox.

When talking about what helps him move through the pressure and challenges of being a famous artist, Namjoon once said “when I go to the museum, grow plants, and ride my bike, it’s all part of a fight to keep myself from going insane.” Making the space to take in art and be in nature allows him to find a kind of peace and respite from his anxieties – to breathe, reset and reflect. Namjooning is a very Four of Swords thing to do! So I love that Reana used that – it feels like a perfect example that shows a non-prescriptive way of relaxing the mind. It beautifully conveys the sense of peace and serenity that nature can bring, not just physically but to our overall wellbeing.

Artist’s Interpretation of the Four of Swords by @rkivean_______

Four of Swords is probably the only light-hearted card in this suit. It talks about healing and finding your true self patiently. It has a very relaxing vibe, it basically tells you to start Namjooning. I specifically used the colours green and blue to show connection with nature because being outside amongst a natural environment can be really healing and fresh. There is absolutely no doubt that Namjoon is the best person for this card. I incorporated the lyrics of ‘Bicycle’ because the song talks about feeling uncertain and restless but urges one to let it all go and rest for a while.
